Test Workload
In this part, you will create a K8s YAML workload that will deploy sample application. We will deploy a micro-service application to the Kubernetes cluster and expose it through the NGINX Ingress controller using ingress resource.
This is the café example that you can find on the nginxinc github page

Create Workload¶
Under Applications, select Workloads, then
- Create a New Workload with the name café-app.
- Set Package Type to k8s YAML, and select the Namespace as nginx-ingress
- Click CONTINUE.
- Upload the cafe.yaml that has been created earlier
- Then go to the PLACEMENT tab of the workload.
- Choose your Drift Action and check the Specific cluster you want to deploy to.
- Click SAVE AND GO TO PUBLISH.
- Click PUBLISH for the workload cafe-app.
- Ensure that it gets published successfully in the target cluster before moving to the next step.
Verify Workload¶
Verify that the micro-services are up and working.
- From the Publish screen of the workload, you can select the DEBUG option near your cluster name.
- Select Pods from the Deployment Resources list and you should be able to see all the café application pods are running.
We can now test the services are responding from the NGINX Ingress Controller.
- Navigate to Infrastructure -> Clusters
- Click on the kubectl link in the upper right of your cluster.
kubectl get svc –n nginx-ingress
This will give you the EXTERNAL-IP address of the load balancer.
- Open a terminal session to a machine that can access this cluster.
- Set the ingress controller IP address and https port into shell variables.
- You can then test the services via curl.
Save the public IP address of the Ingress Controller into a shell variable:
$ IC_IP=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (replace with the actual IP address)
Save the HTTPS port of the Ingress Controller into a shell variable:
$ IC_HTTPS_PORT=<port number>
Test Workload¶
To access the application, curl the coffee and the tea services. We'll use curl's --insecure option to turn off certificate verification of our self-signed certificate and the --resolve option to set the Host header of a request with cafe.example.com
To get coffee:
$ curl --resolve cafe.example.com:$IC_HTTPS_PORT:$IC_IP https://cafe.example.com:$IC_HTTPS_PORT/coffee --insecure
Server address: 10.42.1.126:8080
Server name: coffee-b7b4dc5b5-t4nk9
Date: 21/Sep/2022:18:28:19 +0000
URI: /coffee
If your preference is tea:
$ curl --resolve cafe.example.com:$IC_HTTPS_PORT:$IC_IP https://cafe.example.com:$IC_HTTPS_PORT/tea --insecure
Server address: 10.42.0.76:8080
Server name: tea-8454464df-tbx52
Date: 21/Sep/2022:18:28:31 +0000
URI: /tea
Request ID: 4ffad739bdb40bf140b10ae24e750678
Recap¶
Congratulations!
Now, you have successfully created a custom cluster blueprint with the NGINX Ingress Controller addons and applied that to a cluster. You can now use this blueprint on as many clusters as you require.
